How to care for a new tattoo
You take care of a tattoo to protect the image and prevent infection. The better tattoo parlors will give their customer an information leaflet with aftercare instructions.
The standard instructions most often involve;
- Taking off the bandage a couple of hours after you leave the shop
- Using an antibacterial soap to gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water
- You should never rub your new tattoo – pat it dry
- Apply thin coats of antibacterial ointment – don’t use too much because this could damage the tattoo
- Try not to allow the tattoo soak in water and don’t let the shower spray go directly onto the skin
- Keep out of the swimming pool until after it has healed
- Do not pick at any scab on your tattoo
- If there is a bit of swelling or redness you can use an ice pack
- If your tattoo looks infected then you should seek medical help
